Ungli Review - Ungliwaale Ninja Basanti

What is it all about?

Sad.. It’s so bad. A crappy instant noodle (on availability of actors date) type of cinema that continuously has unconvincing, irrational events orchestrated by the writer director Renzil D'Silva (brilliant when good - Rang De Basanti as writer) and awful when bad both as writer and director.. Wallah‘Kurbaan’.

What could have being a ‘turtle’ of outburst on the prevailing corruption in our Indian system.. this ‘Batman’ meets Ninjas meets cliché mediocre b-town drama is further ridiculed by cheesy dialogues by Milap Jhaveri which goes like ‘Tum Kale Ho Toh Kya Hua, Who Bhi Dilwaale Hai’.. so Dulhaniya (read audience) Yeh Le Jayeinge... no never..

The Story

So anything clever in this ‘Ungli’ to the corruption system.. nah.. it’s a ho hum with the baseline 'The system is so corrupt that you can only ridicule it'. Ironically Rensil and Milap ridicule the already cliché and mediocre plot with their script and dialogues in this story.

The movie opens with an old man and his young daughter waiting at the Pension Office and being insulted by the 'babus' in the department. The old suffers a mild stroke. In the hospital where he is being admitted an intern medical professional Maya (Kangna Ranaut), comes to know about the incident and informs her Ungli gang members Abhay (Randeep Hooda) - a crime reporter, Goti (Neil Bhoopalam) - a computer engineer and Kalim (Angad Bedi) - a mechanic.

Ungli gang has its first case.. and within 10 minutes the movie starts appearing to be a laughing cry by bunch of a youngsters to gain some high instead of some hard hitting corruption ki safai..

Anyways while the ‘Ungli’ gang is kidnapping its targets and shooting their videos appearing like Ninjas with a torch on their forehead which go live on the nation’s top channel without much investigation, ACP Ashok Kale (Sanjay Dutt) gets assigned with the task of catching this gang.

Kale seeks help from Nikhil (Emraan Hashmi) - a junior police officer and son of an honest police wala. But Nikhil is more interested in his final lip lock (remember it’s an Emran Hashmi entertainer) with his girlfriend (Rachel White) and how he does that? The answer is he makes an anonymous call to the police saying there's a bomb in her hostel. Mind blowing.

After kissing good bye to his firang girlfriend Nikhil dances with Basanti (Shraddha Kapoor horribly wasted in a terrible dance number which goes like ‘Naach Basanti’ something.. ). A call from Kale makes Nikhil leave Basanti dancing alone as he too dons this weird cross over mask of ‘Batman’ cum Ninjha with a torch to do some interesting tricks posing as ‘Ungli’ to get notice which are as juvenile as done by the original.

Without much struggle Nikhil enters the gang and realizes that the ‘guys’ are doing a good job for the society. Nikhil is now torn between his duty and dosti with the Ungli gang members and in the due course we come to know the reason why this ‘Gang’ was formed.. which is not very convincing..

What happens next forms the crux of the story that fails to add any chapters of glory.

What to look out for

At least Rensil deserves a pat for the noble intentions. In spite of its juvenile approach in its anger against the system the movie has couple of incidents that will receive audience attention.

The camaraderie between the boys in Ungli gang and couple of scenes between Sanjay Dutt and Emran Hashmi are good.

Shot well by Hemant Chaturvedi’s camera, the technicalities are fine with niece background music by John Stewart, crisp editing by Deepa Bhatia (its less than two hours - 114 minutes).

Performance are decent. Sanjay Dutt impresses whenever he comes on screen. Emraan Hashmi is good as usual. Randeep Hooda gets a role with more meat in spite of the presence of Sanjay Dutt and Hashmi and does a good job. Neil Bhoopalam and Angad Bedi are decent.

Neha Dhupia does well and surprisingly has a better role than Kangana.

Other supporting cast Mahesh Manjrekar, Shiv Subramaniyam, Raza Murad, Reema Lagoo pass the muster.

What not

How good the intensions may be. The execution of ‘Ungli’ ends up like the writer director Rensil had penned a nightmare on the solution to the prevailing corruption. Its juvenile, lacks novelty and originality. After penning ‘Rang De Basanti’ Rensil is still in search for some excitement but it seems he is not getting it so he borrows (as many of our writers do) but fails to upgrade it to b-town sensibilities. If Kurbaan basic plot was inspired from Arlington Road(1999), a sequence in ‘Ungli’ is inspired from ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’ where a person gets tattooed on his body while sleeping.

A fine talent like Kangana Ranaut is completely wasted. Appearing for around ten minutes that inclides one song. It’s impossible to figure out what was her contribution to the screenplay.

The first half is somewhat bearable for b-town lovers but the second half is overstretched, banal and boring even for those who by default watch every film on Friday.

Conclusion: Sad ‘Ungli’.. its so bad. This crappy instant noodle (on availability of actors date) type of cinema trying to cash on the corrupt system is such a Bheja fry. Ignore this ‘Ungli’ and ‘point’ elsewhere this weekend.

Satellite Rights Create New Records for LINGAA and PK

The month of December is most awaited month for movie buffs because it witnesses the release of two most anticipated movies of the year viz. Rajinikanth starrer, LINGAA and Aamir Khan starrer, PK.

Rajinikanth starrer, LINGAA is set to release on December 12, which incidentally is also the birthday of the Thalaiva Rajinikant hence it will be a double bonanza for Rajinikant fans and probably for the makers too as it might break all box office records.

Likewise Aamir Khan starrer, PK which release on December 19, 2014 is the most awaited movie because its unique marketing has already generated a buzz among film buffs and secondly it brings together the two genius Aamir Khan and Raju Hirani, who gave the masterpiece 3 IDIOTS.

While the cinegoers are waiting the release day with bated breath, the war for satellite right of the movies has already created a furor and set new benchmarks.

According to reports Rajinikanth starrer LINGAA has broken the records of all previous South movies by fetching a whopping Rs 32 crore from Tamil channel Jaya TV!

It may be noted that Jaya TV broke its own record as it had bought Vijay starrer, KATHTHI at Rs 13 crore and Shankar’s movie I for Rs 19 crore. However insiders reveal another upcoming Tamil channel had bid Rs 28 crore for the rights of LINGAA hence to overpower it Jaya TV bought the rights for a massive amount of Rs 32 crore!

As regard Aamir Khan’s PK the movie is expected to earn an incredible amount of Rs 85 crore from satellite rights, which is reported to be the biggest satellite deal ever.

Last year, Shah Rukh Khan's CHENNAI EXPRESS satellite rights were sold for Rs 45 crore to Zee. It was said to be the biggest ever, but Salman Khan's KICK, which is the highest grosser of the year, earned Rs 50 crore from the satellite rights deal. However Aamir Khan broke the records of both the Khans and registered a new record with whopping Rs 75 crore for his movie DHOOM 3 for Sony Television!

Kaaviya Thalaivan Review - Retro classic

The pioneer of what we watch as movie today, was the tedious, arduous, yet vibrant and intricately artistic stage drama. Much before cinema halls came into being, drama troups staged entertainment across theatres earmarked for entertainment, travelling across the country on schedules. There was no rerecording nor retakes; what survived was pure breed of multifaceted talent. 'Kaaviya Thalaivan' is a revisit to the glory of all this and much more, of the past.

The story:

Kalliappa Bhagavathar and Gomathi Nayagam Pillai, along with others, are all students and actors in the prestigious drama school of Sivadas Swamigal. Gomathi, played by Prithviraj, is a man of the rules and rigmarole, while Kali, played by Siddharth, is an innovative man with new ideas that he implements in his acting. This adds an edge to Kali over Gomathi for being the Rajapaatu or lead actor. Thambi Ramaiah is the troupe's teacher and effectively the company's manager too. Vadivambal (Vedhicka) happens to join the troupe and goes on to become the Sripaatu or heroine.

When Sivadas Swamigal (Nasser) finds out about Kali's love affair with the princess Rangamma (Annaika Soti), the actor is cursed away from the love of his life and shunned from stage too. Eventually, the princess dies, and so does Swami. Fight for independence tightens in the country, and Kali's inclination towards patriotism stands up. But for now, he has nothing in life to hold on to, as he is abandoned by Gomathi after taking over the drama company. Will this lone man ever be able to fight for a cause and for a living?

The magic:

The story is of an age more than 80 years ago, yet staged on this day. To recreate the image of those days, it takes immaculate art direction, as projected by Santhanam. The hue of shimmering past, the glitters of drama, simplicity of reality those days and the spirit of patriotism - everything stands out visually. Another thing of the past is the concern for language and diction, which have very well been honoured by Jeyamohan. Over the years, virtual lens has sharpened at par with human eyes, and Nirav Shah has enhanced the magic with his camera. In this musical drama, songs that take off from the main stream of story are in no way a deterrent to the movie.

AR Rahman - one name speaks volumes for the spirit of the movie. Not only has the beauty of songs translated into visual treat, but his music stands out in moving the audience in every scene, with the score. Praveen takes the credit for editing to perfection, especially in the climax.

Team Vasanthabalan and Jeyamohan is a duo with high creativity and symbiotic understanding for a healthy piece of art. Vasanthabalan has come up with an original period-set story and Jeyamohan has complimented the director's work with beautifully chosen words for dialogues, which maintain its purity, yet is understandable. Working together on the screenplay, the two have worked a timeless classic.

The primary characters Siddharth, Prithviraj and Vedhicka are show stealers. Siddharth plays the hard-to-believe too-good-to-be-true Kali that recieves applause for his stage performance, as well as his character. Prithviraj plays the convincingly hurt but cold simpleton Gomathi driven by mistaken perception of situations. Vedhicka is Vadivu, who later goes on to be showered with praises and titles for her voice and performance. She plays a dedicated yet composed actress. Nasser as Swami and Thambi Ramaiah as the teacher, make for good supporting actors, that are game changers in many parts. Brief presence of Annaika and Mansoor Ali Khan are enjoyable.

The touches:

The film can practically not be critiqued in lack of colours. A very different story, a team to perceive it in the right light, actors who live the characters dictated to them, with the best in class for art, music and picture, 'Kaaviya Thalaivan' is a perfect package. Also, the perspective in which relationships are handled, is not one of the regular methods. But if at all something smells sour, it could only be the minor touches like the characterisation of Kali or questions on practical turns in this thread of fiction. The movie is overwhelming with the sheer number of actors in it, but they all have a role to play, and are very much a necessity for the story to have taken such a shape. The story is no big secret, and is predictable at most places, as to what it might lead to, in the next frame. Kali's critic on Vadivu is blunt at times but is still understandable. The climax convinces but leaves multiple unanswered questions. But all said, 'Kaaviya Thalaivan' really is a meticulously laid out drama, polished in the story and perfected in each frame, for a classic entertainer for all, and especially for those who have a taste for retro.

What more to Naaigal Jaakirathai? - Sibiraj says it all !

Actor Sibiraj, fresh from the success of Naaigal Jaakirathai, is going beyond the reel and taking up the cause of animals in real life too. He opens up in an interaction with Behindwoods.

"I am not just a dog lover. I'm an animal lover on the whole. I love animals of all sizes and shapes. With films like Naaigal Jaakirathai, where an animal plays an important role throughout, Animal welfare boards and other NGOs will raise their voice against the movie.

But representatives from 'People for Cattle India' came all the way to meet me and congratulate team Naaigal Jaakirathai. They were extremely happy about the way the dog was positioned and treated on and off the movie. We took special care of the dog and made sure that it never got hurt even when the stunt portions were shot.

'People for Cattle India' is a one of a kind NGO tirelessly working to completely negate the cruelty shown towards cattle. They are on a revolutionary motive to curtail the soon to be held animal sacrifice happening at Nepal called the Gadhimai, where 5 lakh odd cows will be killed and left to rot. I feel proud and happy to endorse their initiative. Through PFCI, I'm taking up "Adopt a rescued dog" campaign. Going beyond films feels so real."

The motion poster of Sivakarthikeyan’s Kakki Sattai is geared up to release tomorrow (28th November), while the audio launch is touted to happen on the 5th of December.

Also, there were reports circulating in the internet that the producers, Wunderbar Films had paid a huge sum to the 1985's Kakki Sattai film makers to get the title. Now the latest breaking news is that the makers of Kakki Sattai are eyeing for a late December release, possibly on the 19th or the 24th of December. The exact release date is not confirmed yet.

KAADU MOVIE REVIEW

CAST AND CREW

Production: CHAKRAVARTHY FILMS INTERNATIONAL
Cast:            Samskruthi, Samuthirakani, Thambi Ramaiah , Vidharth
Direction:    Stalin Ramalingam
Screenplay: Stalin Ramalingam
Story:          Stalin Ramalingam
Music:         K
Editing:       Kasivishwanathan
Lyrics:         Yugabharathi

At a time when the same old beaten to death themes invade the screens week after week, here is Kaadu directed by debutant Stalin Ramalingam that stands out for its earnest concern for our dwindling natural resources especially forests and for recording the plight of people who are dependent on the woodlands.

In a way ‘Live and Let Live’ is emphasized in Kaadu and Stalin clearly says that if we are not going to take care of our forests and continue to ravage it, Nature would hit us with such power that humankind would not be able to withstand its onslaught.

When a theme such as deforestation is the basic premise of a film, it is bound to raise apprehensions about its engaging and entertainment quotient. While Kaadu scores fairly well on the engrossing factor, it is not so in the entertainment department. That said, if Stalin had leaned a little on the other side to bring in the commercial elements to keep his audience amused, the film would have lost its spunk.

Velu (Vidharth), an illiterate makes his living through selling fire wood in his picturesque village. Fellow villager Karna’s (Muthukumar) ambition is to become a forest guard but is unable to realize his dreams due to paucity of funds. On the other side, there is government trying to safeguard the forests by driving away people who inhabit the woods. In the middle, there are people who ravage the forests by smuggling sandalwood and other prized trees. In the cross fire between the government and smugglers are the gullible villagers who are exploited by both the parties. Kaadu records all these in a very sincere manner.

Kaadu can easily win brownie points for being a very socially responsible film and the viewer’s hat should definitely be tipped in favor of Stalin. The topic should have been very dear to the young director to have the conviction to make a film sans any star power or compromising factors. Sharp powerful dialogues add to the plus of the film. The arrival of Samuthirakani revs up the proceedings. Stalin uses Samuthirakani to mouth the Argentine Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara’s principles and a lot of awakening ideologies.

However Samuthirakani’s character appears to be forced just to utter the leftist dogmas. His character is not clearly explained and his entire jail segment, although powerful, do not fall in line with the rest of the story. In fact, Stalin stutters a little in the second half when he brings in a few incohesive events and characters. The way the forest officials handle an innocent man is quite shocking and ruthless. The romance portions could have been avoided as they don’t serve any purpose to the film. Singam Puli’s comedy tracks generate a faint déjà vu of Soori’s Parotta episode and are just about passable.

Besides Vidharth and Samuthirakani, there is heroine Sanskruthi who does not have much to do. Naren, Thambi Ramaiah, Poo Ram, R N R Manohar and Singam Puli round out the supporting cast. K’s BGM is noticeable, while Mahendran Jayaraju’s camera work dazzles especially in a few forest and night shots. Rajasekar’s stunts are effectively choreographed.

To sum it all, Stalin’s Kaadu is made with a lot of purpose and one that is very relevant in today’s times. The film will work for people who are open to non-entertainment projects but done with a lot of sincerity.

Verdict: A socially responsible film done with earnest concern

Kaadu continues in the realm of Kaththi and OORR

'Movies can and do have tremendous influence in shaping young lives in the realm of entertainment towards the ideals and objectives of normal adulthood'' - Walt Disney. Proving the saying right, commercial successes in the recent past have seen a huge impact amidst the audience in terms of providing a unique social angle to the film's story.

Films this month have made us laugh, cry and mock. More than all, films have inspired us beyond the realm of commercial aspects. For instance Kaththi touched upon various social message based subjects like water scarcity, corruption and the plight of the aged. The movie inspired the older generation to move forward without the fear of getting 'old'. Further the complete power-packed monologue of Vijay gave an insight into the political situation and how corruption has doomed the society. This has impacted the younger crowd to rethink about the political morale. This film on the whole acted as an Infotainment.

Another unexpected commercial mainstream film that created an effect in the minds of the viewer was Oru Oorla Rendu Raja. Pre-release, the film was expected to be a wholesome entertainer but the movie actually dealt the case of the issue of industrial workers. The case primarily was about the heightened noise pollution in a factory. Here, the movie provided us with the cognizance of a situation at a manufacturing factory.

More to come on these lines. The upcoming film Kaadu is also seen as another socially-inclined one. The movie highlights the perils of deforestation and the importance of forests. It is directed by debutante Stalin and edited by Kasi Viswanathan.

Such films don't just provide fun and entertainment, there is also a key takeaway. Films have evolved to such a great extent that now they are not made just for its commercial success and box-office returns, but also as an 'art' crafted to communicate a message to the public to stay aware, informed and empowered.
